Finding a Good Locksmith in Your Area

There are some things that are worth putting more effort into doing than others. Whenever you are spending your hard earned money on a service provider, no doubt you want them to deliver. You can always find a good locksmith to handle your lock and key issues and concerns if you put forth the effort to do so. At Riverside Locksmith in Riverside, CA we work with the best and most qualified locksmiths around. When you are to hire a good locksmith, you will need to consider a couple of things before hiring someone. Never jump at the first offer that you receive and don’t go with anyone that you do not feel comfortable with. Some locksmith companies will offer you the earth and the moon just to get your business. Once they have your business, they may not deliver the quality of services that you expected. This is why it is important to consider the following before signing on the dotted line.

Successfully hire a good locksmith by considering the following suggestions:

          1. Getting a Quote

You should never ask for a quote and not receive one. If you make an inquiry about services, the service provider should always be willing to offer you a written quote. This is something that is pretty standard in most service industries. Therefore, you should never have to force someone to give you a written quote. If they want your business, they will offer it willingly. Also, when you receive a quote and what was discussed is not the same as it is on the quote, bring this to their attention before any work begins. It is always in your best interest to receive more than one quote at a time.

         2. Reliable and Honest

It can be rather frustrating to hire someone to perform the job and they do not show up as scheduled. This is a really bad sign. Now, we do understand that things happen. However, in the even that the service provider is unable to attend to your needs, they should make arrangements with someone else to do so or at least provide you with enough notice for you to find someone else. This is the professional and courteous thing to do. You also want to make sure that the service provider you are hiring has a good reputation for being honest. This information can be obtained by asking friends and family members for referrals. Chances are that they will be forthright in letting you know whether or not the service provider was trustworthy or not. You can also check service review websites, such as, Angie’s List, to find out what others are saying about a specific company.

3. Professional Qualifications

A locksmith service that is reputable and reliable will belong to some professional organizations. They have to qualify to be a member of many of the professional organizations. If they go through the trouble of qualifying, this is a good sign that they take their craft seriously. They want to give their customers what they pay for. Being associated with certain organizations in the industry enables the service providers to remain aware of new and emerging technology that will make their job easier and more efficient. Some groups are easier to get into than others but if they are determined that they are going to be a part of a specific organization and they get in, this means they want to satisfy the needs of their customers.

         4.  Length of Time in Business

If a company has been in business for a long time, it is a good sign that they are doing something right. If they were not getting business they wouldn’t still be around. Many businesses that are family owned train their family members to handle the job. They see the value in keeping business in the family because they all have a vested interest in its success. However, in some instances, they will say that they are family owned because of the reputation it affords them. So even if it is family owned or not, don’t let this sway your final decision. It is a good idea, however, to use a service provider who has been in the business for 10 years or more. It speaks to their level of commitment.

        5.  Get Referrals

This is probably one of the most significant things you can do before hiring any type of service provider; ask for referrals. You can’t open your doors to just anybody. You must be careful before allowing anyone into your home. When you make an inquiry about a service provider, ask point blank, would you hire this service. This way you can say that you received a referral. You don’t want just any referral though. Make sure the referral comes from someone who is reliable and trustworthy. When you ask family or friends, you are likely able to get a true and fair assessment of the service provider. You should also ask the service provider to provide you with referrals. If they are a reputable service provider, they will be more than happy to provide you with referrals. They are proud of their referrals and will often provide them to you without your having to ask for them. However, if they do not, we still encourage you to ask for them.

      6. Ask for Credentials

A reputable and reliable locksmith will have all of the necessary credentials to conduct business as a professional service provider in your area. Before you allow them to perform the job they have been hired to perform, ALWAYS ask for credentials. This is something that will be most important when hiring a good locksmith. Again, if they are a reputable locksmith service, they will often provide potential customers with this information before you can even ask for it. This is truly a good sign of a service provider who has nothing to hide and who is serious about their craft.

Home LockoutsLocks are like trees; there are countless varieties of them! There should be too. After all, you can find locks at home, in your car, at your work or at your business. Locks are present whether you are on vacation or serving in the military. There’s a reason for this – locks work and they are needed! Locks secure what is valuable to us and they also provide us privacy, protection and peace of mind. Here at Riverside Locksmith we proudly offer lock and key service to area residents and we offer this post to familiarize you with some of the various kinds of locks that can be found in our vicinity. Call us anytime with your questions or call your favorite Riverside, CA lock and key shop – just make sure that you get the right locks for the right tasks and you will lead a safer and more secure life.

Always choose quality hardware

When buying or installing locks of any kind; be sure to select the best hardware. This doesn’t mean that you have to overspend! Many shops, including ours, offer best-quality locks, keys, and lock hardware that is finely made and not expensive. Some of the best national brands include Master, Kwikset, Marlock, Sentry, Primus, Llco, ASSA, Baldwin, Medeco, Schlage, Yale, Falcon, Ace, Kaba, Abloy, Sentex, Dexter, Falcon and many others. With brands like these, you are always assured of getting the best value. Keep one thing in mind; the very best lock hardware is useless without proper installation and use!

Please don’t skip this section! Deadbolts are invaluable when it comes to better protection. For your dollar, deadbolts present real value as they are not fancy or expensive. Do they work? That depends. The deadbolt needs to be of quality and needs to be installed right. Lastly, it needs to be used!

Deadbolts come in one or two cylinder forms. The most common is the single bolt model. This lock inserts a steel bolt through the strike plate and into the door frame. It has a knob on one end for turning and a key slot on the other for insertion. What’s the big deal about this? Deadbolt locks offer a second line of defense against intrusion. Trying to bypass a deadbolt right after picking a door lock gives the homeowner time to call police or arm themselves and burglars know this. It is much easier and safer (for the crook!) to give up and move on to easier, less secured property.

High security locks

These locks are little known but oh, so valuable. Don’t let the name intimidate you – high security locks are not expensive. Unlike hollow tin locks of the “normal” variety, high security locks are made of solid steel and are not able to be picked or bumped open. For that matter they are fireproof, smash proof and cannot be shot open either! Lock bumping is an ever increasing form of gaining entry into homes and businesses. It’s easy to do, takes only a few seconds, and 90% of all locks on doors today are susceptible. Worse still, lock bumping leaves no evidence of forced entry. Try filing a police report or insurance claim with no proof of illegal entry! With high security locksets, you’ll never worry about lock bumping or give it a second thought!

Keyless entry

Keyless entry is just like it sounds; no keys! It’s been used for years in the automotive field and can now be found in residential use as well as in commercial applications. These locks do away with keys altogether and key codes and number sequences are used instead. With keyless entry, you no longer have to carry around a ponderous set of keys. Just enter your code and you’re in! For security purposes, the system locks up if too many attempts are made at “guessing” and some newer systems now sound an alarm and even call police if it suspects a problem.

Biometric locks

These sci-fi sounding locks are already in use and their popularity is soaring. Instead of a number sequence or key code, your thumbprint is used. Apple’s I-Phone and other products have made these locks mainstream and they are perfect for jewelry stores, banks, government facilities, luxury hotels, research facilities and lots more!

Cam locks

These are found in offices and desks not only here in Riverside, CA but all over the world. These are the locks so prevalent in file cabinets, desks, mailboxes, laundromats and vending machines. You can spot them by their “cam” or tail that rotates 90 to 180 degrees when locked. They do an adequate job of locking but they were never meant for anything other than low-level security purposes. Cam locks are easy to pick or bypass and you should never keep anything of real value or privacy secured by a cam lock.

Mortise locks

Most people are very familiar with mortise locks; they just don’t know that they are called by this name. The word mortise means recessed. That’s because these locks are recessed inside the door and not installed on it. This makes the lock more stable and stronger. So where have you seen these recessed locks so often? On residential front doors! These are the locks that where you insert your key from the outside and then push down on the handle when you are unlocking from the outside. When opening from the inside, just turn the handle to open it. A word to the wise; these locks can be a handful when trying to install on your own. This brings us to our next subject; calling a professional for help.

Call a locksmith

Sometimes, calling in the pros just makes sense. Don’t call any locksmith; call the right one for your needs. Consider the time and money saved when using the services of a full service, 24-hour lock and key expert. In Riverside, CA there are many shops that offer affordable rates, experienced and friendly technicians and even free, no obligation consultations.

Transponder KeysIn the old days, if you ever lost your car key, you would have a spare key that you’d easily had made at the local locksmith, hardware store, or dealership. However, nowadays, losing your keys has become much more problematic than it used to be in the 1990s ~ in other words, before computer chips. A traditional car key, with its unique grooves and cuts, was just like a house key, so you could get it duplicated inexpensively.

The downside to a regular car key back in the day was of course that, because it was easy to copy, it was also relatively easy for a car thief to steal your vehicle. Cars are much harder to steal today because of advances in transponder key technology. A transponder key, even though it’s more expensive, is undoubtedly worth the peace of mind it affords you.

But what should you do if you’ve lost your transponder key?

What type of transponder key did you lose?

Inside your transponder key’s plastic head is a chip, which sends a singular signal, which goes to the receiver in your vehicle, instructing it to start. The main difference between a standard key and a transponder key is that the chip inside your transponder key must be programmed. For most cars today, an electronic key fob (also called the remote) is an integral component to the key set. It’s important that you protect your transponder key, because, depending upon the complexity of its design and on your automaker, the replacement of a lost electronic fob is typically very expensive. The fob has to be suitably programmed. There are some dealerships that will do it for free, but most will charge you an arm and a leg.

For some automobiles, the transponder key and the fob are an all-in-one unit. Also referred to as a laser-cut key, the shank is a little thicker, and has fewer carved-out grooves. Laser-cut keys are also referred to as “sidewinder” keys, because they have a winding-shaped cut on the shank. The laser-cut key’s built-in chip needs programming. It’s harder to get a spare key made anywhere, except at your dealership. It’s more expensive, but your car is more secure.

A switchblade key is another sort of key that has a transponder chip inside. A switchblade key has a shank, which folds into the fob when you aren’t using it. Press a button, and it will pop out. This key has either a laser cut or regular cut. One benefit of a switchblade key is that you can buy the parts separately. If you’ve truly lost your key permanently, then both components need programming.

A smart key is not actually a key ~ not in the normal sense of the word. It’s only a fob. You either stick it in the dash, or you keep it on your belt buckle, in your pocket, or in your purse. Just get into the driver’s seat, and you can start or stop your car by pressing a button. A smart key is ultra secure, since it has rolling security codes. That means it’s continually randomizing the right code, a major feature which prevents a potential car thief from hacking it with a code grabber. Replace your smart key at the dealership.

Have a spare key made.

Are you constantly losing your keys, arguing with your teenager or spouse over who lost whose keys? Save on transponder key programming by making a third spare key. Since you likely already have two keys (which you should have received when you purchased your car), a good number of models and makes will let you program a third key. First off, hire an automotive locksmith to cut you a third key; then you can read your owner’s manual and program it yourself.

The following procedure will work on many American-made automobiles. But before you spend your money, consult your dealership or ask your local automotive locksmith professional to see if these steps will be effective on your specific vehicle. If you’re anywhere in Riverside, California, track down a dependable local locksmith, such as a staff mobile automotive locksmith specialist of Riverside Locksmith.

  1. First, insert one of the two working keys, and turn the ignition to the “on” position for about three seconds (don’t start the car).
  2. Now, do the same thing with your second key.
  3. Finally, insert the new third key. Turn it to the “on” position for another three seconds. This will successfully program your extra key.

Do It Yourself

One thing you can do to get into your automobile is, you can get only the standard key, but not the transmitter. This is less costly, and you’ll at least have a key that will get you inside your car. This is handy if you lock your car keys inside your car. The programming element, which does the remote unlocking and locking, is a luxury, since it’s not really required for gaining entry or for driving. You can program this part by yourself by following the instructions in your owner’s manual. Or, hire an expert automotive locksmith technician to do it for you.

Don’t ever lose your transponder key again!

No matter how you slice it, a transponder key is expensive. The best way to prevent misplacing it again is to prepare ahead of time. Don’t tempt fate! If you have only one car key, it’s better to have a spare key made right now, than to get stressed out about it in the future, when you’ll end up in a crisis, spending much more than you ever wanted to.

Should you decide to program your transponder key, you’ll need:

  • proof that you’re the owner, with two types of identification
  • your vehicle’s chassis number
  • the code on the manufacturer’s original code card, which originally came with your vehicle

If you can’t find that code, hire an automotive locksmith professional who will carry out the reprogramming correctly to get you back on the road again. A reliable professional will be qualified to help you, usually at a lower price than what the dealership will charge.

The limiting of the access one has to a certain room can be very important, especially if you have a room that is potentially hazardous to be in, or one that stores very expensive items which can’t be trusted with just anyone. Access control is a valid, tested way to limit the access of specific areas to certain people that you know you can trust. This is becoming such a popular solution that the team at Riverside Locksmith (which primarily serves the Riverside, CA area) has compiled this information for your convenience. You will find everything you want to know about access control and get a better idea of how it works.

What is access control? How does it work?

As briefly mentioned, this solution restricts access to certain areas or to certain people. You have the ability to give the authorization to enter a room or to access certain parts of a property to the people of your choosing. Access control is a solution that is utilized in businesses, on university campuses, and more. Often times, companies that have hazardous materials in certain areas will only want specified, experienced individuals to be able to get into these areas. So, in a nutshell, it is a solution that is utilized by a wide variety of people and businesses. It works by the use of a code or even a fingerprint. You might have a box with numbers on it outside of a door, and a person will only be able to get in if they know the specific code. Or perhaps you want to only allow entry based off a person’s unique fingerprint.

Are there any other benefits or perks to using restricted access?

One of the biggest pros to using access control is that you can stop unauthorized persons from accessing certain resources or parts of your property. You can have a sense of comfort knowing that not just anyone can get their hands on the chemicals which might be in your warehouse or the expensive diamonds that might in your shop. In addition to knowing that not just anyone can access your property, you can also keep track of the individuals who are coming into your property and leaving it. You are able to find systems which will notify you if someone comes into an area or leaves it. You can also find systems that produce traffic reports for you. You can even have the option to monitor things remotely. Basically, access control offers a lot of benefits and convenience, in addition to peace of mind. So it is easy to see why so many individuals are opting to take advantage of it. People want a safe environment for themselves, and for everyone else. Whether you are mainly looking to limit access to a room or to an entire building, or to something else, you can benefit from this excellent, technologically advanced solution.

If you end up researching access control, some of the terms you will come across include credentials, readers, control panels, visitor management systems, web based access control and more. Things can definitely get a bit overwhelming, just because there is so much relevant information on the topic. For this reason, you will want to get on the phone with an expert. With web based access control, for instance, you will be able to manage your system or monitor it from anywhere in which you are able to get Internet connection. In this day and age, with just about everyone up and on the go all of the time, this is a popular solution. Whether you are interested in revoking rights to certain points of your property or simply keeping track of things in a better, easier way, access control might just be for you.

Importance of Having Gun Safe

Going Keyless

If you like the advances in technology, we are certain that you are already familiar with keyless ignitions. They offer a level of convenience that most people associate with luxury. However, not everyone is in favor of this type of key. It is a frightening thought to consider a car starting with a physical key being placed in the ignition. So if you don’t already know this, a keyless ignition enables a motorist to start the engine without inserting a key in the ignition. The remote transmitter has to be close to the car before it will recognize the key. You simply hit the start button and the car automatically turns on, as long as the transmitter is nearby. Many motorist find this especially helpful if they always have to dig for their keys or if they don’t know exactly where there key is located. Some people simply appreciate the modern convenience this type of key offers to them. Whatever the case may be, it doesn’t seem that this new technology is going anywhere soon.

One of the advantages of having a keyless ignition is that the car thief is unable to take your car. The car will only start when the computer picks up a specific signal, which only your key fob holds. Without this fob it is virtually impossible for them to start the car. It would take a highly intelligent car thief to go into the dashboard of your car and put the right wires together to start the car. Another advantage to the keyless ignition is that the ignition circuit may be completely disabled if theft is detected. As impressive as this is to some people, there are still some people who are not all interested in this type of car.

Superior Level of Convenience

When you are in a hurry and don’t want to waste time finding your key, this is the type of key for you. It prevents you from having to take time to find the car key by starting up right away. Simply by staying somewhere in the vicinity of your car will allow the signal to reach the computer and automatically start your car. If you work late into the evening and you couldn’t be bothered, it is a good idea to at least look into the possibility of buying a car that offers this feature. Even if you have an older car that doesn’t have a keyless ignition, you can still purchase a keyless key. With just one push of a button, you can be off and running in no time.

Drawbacks to Having Keyless Ignitions

There is no doubt about it that the biggest advantage to a keyless entry is the level of convenience it affords those who use it. It wouldn’t be fair if we didn’t also mention the drawback of having this type of new technology at your finger tip. At Riverside Locksmith in Riverside, CA, we have been told that many customers are put off by the expensive price of this feature. The cost of this is usually hidden into the cost of the price. While you may not see it because it isn’t clearly indicated on the slip, trust us when we tell you that it is actually there. While we certainly understand that to some people this added expense is not worth it, there are those who see the value in having a keyless ignition. When you stop to think of exactly what it requires to design this type of technology, then it becomes clear why they have to charge customers more. Developing this system isn’t cheap. We pay for convenience and it doesn’t matter to some people how much they have to pay for this level of convenience. The other drawback is the expense of replacing the keyless fob. This is an electronic fob that needs to be near you in order for the keyless ignition to start. If you happen to lose this key, you’ll be out of $100 or more to replace it. This isn’t a key that is made as quickly as a traditional key. This type of key requires the right type of equipment to program it. Each one is programmed for your specific vehicle and cannot be easily duplicated.

Bottom Line

So the bottom line is that it is purely based on preference as to whether or not you opt to buy a car with a keyless ignition or not. The pros may outweigh the cons for you and you might feel as though it is totally worth the added expense to receive the convenience it offers. Whereas, on the other hand, you may not feel as though it is worth the added expense because you really prefer to have a physical key to place in the ignition. With anything that is considered a major purchase, we would strongly suggest that you simply do your homework before making your purchase. Most dealerships will try to steer you toward this options because they make a commission off of it. However, if you consult with a locksmith, they will have a more objective point of view and will be open and honest about what you can expect when you have a keyless ignition. Locksmiths don’t really have anything to lose by telling you upfront what you can expect when you have a keyless ignition. This is why they are a good resource when you are considering this type of keyless option. You’ll be glad you did the research before hand because if you choose to get this type of key, at least you there will not be any surprises along the way. You’ll know full-well just what you can expect when you purchase this type of advanced technology. The last thing you would want to do is determine later that this wasn’t the best decision for you to have made. Then you’ll be stuck with it and we would hate to see anyone stuck with something they don’t want.

Garage door locks; additional security!

Many people have not heard of garage door locks, but they are becoming more and more popular every day; not only here in Riverside, CA but anywhere garages are used, both at home and for business. Our Riverside Locksmith experts know how using garage door locks can greatly increase the security of your property and especially the contents of your garage whether it’s guarded by a single tilt up or a huge industrial garage door.

Why lock the garage door?

It’s an honest question; your garage door leads into your garage. You naturally want to secure the contents of this large room so locking your garage door just makes sense. Take the average home garage for example. The typical residential garage contains at least one vehicle (car, truck, SUV, van, etc.) as well as bicycles, motorcycle, golf cart, garden tools, water heater, work bench, water softener system, storage containers, lawn furniture, and lots more. All of these items cost money and if stolen, would need replacement at some point. While every garage is different, you can see where most home garages contain a wealth of belongings that are important both in monetary worth and personal value.

Gateways into the home

You already know that your garage door opens (usually) into your home or business. Did you also know that your garage can be a gateway into “burglar heaven?” Every year many Riverside, CA homes are burglarized from inside the garage. That’s right; the crooks get inside the garage and worked in peace and seclusion to pick the lock on the door leading into the home, or simply walk through the unlocked door directly into the house where they can steal at will! Do you see the advantage of breaking into the garage? From the street, no one notices anything! Sometimes, the burglar’s vehicle is even driven into the garage and loaded with items from the house and then driven out while the whole thing looks normal to anyone not familiar with the real occupants.

What you can do!

First of all, don’t panic. It’s always difficult to think clearly when under stress or extreme uncertainty. Next, try and clean up the area just outside your garage door. By saying this, we mean trimming tree branches, hedges, bushes or other large plants that people can hide behind. Keep in mind that burglars often observe the victim(s) before they actually steal. Large, overgrown shrubbery is ideal to hide behind and watch your intended victims go about their business. Arrival and departure times can be noted, and lights on at night, as well as open curtains can reveal other information like floorplan layouts, any possible weapons and number of persons in the household; all good things to know about before actually breaking in. You can never go wrong making your home or business property look neater and more attractive, and you might just discourage a home burglar or common thief from even attempting to rob you.

Another helpful tip is to add a light over the garage door. A well-lit area is a real deterrent to criminal activity as any would-be thief would be much easier to notice and observe. Even more recommended is a motion detector light that turns on anytime there is significant movement within its range.

Garage door locks

By now you are probably wondering “what about garage door locks – aren’t they what this post is about?” Following the above advice is recommended to increase the overall security and appearance of your property. Adding garage door locks is the finishing touch to achieving a well secured and hard to rob property for you and your loved ones to live and work in. Who knows; you may not even need the locks if your home or business is clean, well-lit and looking secure!

Garage door slide lock

Slide locks are the most common garage door locks. These are sometimes called latch locks and are simple but very effective. They use a latch that slides from the garage door into a pre-cut hole located in the garage door track. When the lock is in place, it prevents the garage door from lifting up as the latch is locked into place and can’t roll up via the vertical track. These locks are inexpensive and easy to install on your own. They do have one drawback however; they can burn your opener motor out if you forget that the lock is in place and keep trying to run your opener. Sometimes, a family member can lock the garage door and forget to tell roommates or other residents who then attempt to open the garage door using their remotes. Motor burn out is the result and sometimes even damage to the garage door itsel.

T handle lock

Another popular garage door lock is the T Handle keyed lock. You’ve seen them hundreds of times; they have a handle in the shape of a T and are installed on the outside of a garage door. There are two bolts and a cable system on the inside that work to lock the garage door when in use. The bolts are secured to the vertical track and only unlocked when the T Handle is turned. You can only turn the handle with a key so they are well secured from passersby. Again; don’t use your garage door opener when this lock is engaged as damage to the door can occur.

J Arm lock

Is your garage door automatic? If so, it already has a lock of sorts on it. The operator arm; located on the garage door trolley, locks into place when the door is closed. This is what prevents it from opening when lifted manually. This is what you unlock when you pull the red handle on the cord and disconnect the opener.

Which to get?

That’s up to you, but all three are effective and easy to use and install. You can do it yourself or use the services of a professional Riverside, CA locksmith shop if you like. When used correctly garage door locks can add peace of mind and better security to your building.
